Lutes may be in short supply today, but guitars and other stringed instruments abound. The two women face different directions.
The maid lowers her head towards her mistress in a relaxed, easy-going pose. Today Vermeer is acknowledged as the star of Dutch genre painting of the mids, but he did not hold that position at that time.
Lines from the upper and lower window frames proceed across the folded arms and lighted forehead of the maid, extending to a vanishing point in the left eye of the mistress. They touch not only with their eyes. Regular scrubbing would prevent furniture and wooden floors from moulding and rotting.
When the traceable orthogonals of the perspectival system of the present work are extended to locate the vanishing point, we find that they converge precisely on the right-hand eye of the seated mistress.
The elegant author turns her attention from the letter that she writes and looks out momentarily at the viewer.
In The Love Letter see detail leftthe two women, whoc make direct eye contact, are entangled in a subtly confrontational relationship. Early in his career Vermeer developed a penchant for placing his figures against light backgrounds, a practice tactfully avoided by most Dutch painters who preferred dark backdrops.
The firm stance of the statuesque maid acts as a counterweight to the lively mistress intent on writing her letter. Proper houding avoided a painting appearing, as the Dutch painter and art theorist Samuel van Hoogstraten claimed, "like a chessboard.
Rose Dugdale, the thieves used screwdrivers to cut the paintings from their frames. Whoever designed the installation saved—what I consider—the best to last.
The compositions are virtually identical. However, with no surviving image of Catharina, there is no proof. The maid attending the woman has enough substance with her double skirts to appear conical. The light filters in through a leaded-glass window on the left.
The left upright of the picture frame anchors her in place while the regular folds of her clothing sustain the effect down to the floor. If one isolates the billowing starch-white sleeves from the rest of the painting, they are almost unrecognizable.
This accomplishment is never achieved at the cost of subverting naturalism. There are other subtle, and not so subtle, differences. However, the money was not paid, and Cahill lacked contacts or knowledge to otherwise pass it on to international art thieves.
Some art historians dispute the absoluteness of this view; according to Pascal Bonafoux, while complicity is not "indicated by a look or a smile" from either woman, the mere fact of her presence during such an intimate act as the composition of a love letter indicates at least a degree of intimacy between the two.
The maid looks out the window away from her mistress attempting to isolate herself from the uncomfortable situation while her mistress is emotionally involved in the response to a letter hastily cast down on the floor.
Only after more than seven years of secret negotiations and international detective work was the painting recovered.
Women still fuss at their toilette. However, the Vermeer and other works were recovered eight days later at a cottage in County Cork. While Vermeer was skilled in depicting reality, his rivals, to a man, surpassed him in sheer virtuosity in recording the sheen of satin, the sensuousness of velvet, the folds of drapery, and every other thing in their scenes.
